Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia)

- teaching
- help and advice
- self-help strategies and study skills workshops.
Assessment, including exam concessions for Key Stages 2, 3 and 4
Staff can offer an in-depth assessment of a pupil's literacy skills when indicators of Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia) are suspected. From this assessment a detailed report is written. This includes recommendations for in-school support, together with teaching strategies for inclusion on the pupil's IEP.
Liaison with Educational Psychologists, schools, SENCOs and where possible, parents, leads towards appropriate provision for the pupil who has been identified as having indicators of Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia). Pupils are regularly monitored from identification to post-16 transfer.
Teaching
Specialised, multi-sensory teaching can be delivered by our British Dyslexia Association (BDA) approved teachers.
This same method can be delivered by support staff under the supervision of these specialist teachers.
Help and advice
Advice can also be given to class teachers and school auxiliaries informing them of suitable teaching programmes and packages. Workshops for parents on how to support their child can be provided.
INSET is available to raise awareness of Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia) to assist with early identification and to offer appropriate classroom strategies.
Self-help strategies and study skills workshops.
These workshops are designed to encourage pupils to become independent learners. They provide suggestions to aid organisation, classroom and homework support. Study skills can be provided for secondary pupils. These demonstrate revision techniques, note-taking and memory training.
