Three Levels of Risk Assessment:
Generic:
These are statements of current good practice which apply to the activity wherever and whenever it takes place. They may take the form of LEA policies and guidance, National Governing Body guidance, and the policies and procedures of the individual establishment or service.
Event specific risk assessments:
These assessments will be undertaken by the Group Leader and will be unique to each occasion. They will take into account:
- the site and environment at the time;
- the group and the individuals within it;
- the proposed activity and the leadership arrangements
Ongoing Risk Assessment:
This involves professional judgements in response to changing circumstances. It is critical that control measures are monitored and confirmed or adapted as required. It is these ongoing decisions that will determine the safety of the group and the success of the activity. Where necessary 'Plan B' should be implemented.

- It is important to be aware that the following applies to all visits :
Be aware of the need for a Plan B, should it not be possible for a variety of reasons including inclement weather and increased risks to pursue the planned activity - this should be planned and in writing prior to undertaking visits.
When undertaking particular visits it is good practice to supply pupils with a laminated card with contact details on. When abroad an appropriate translation on the card can also be of benefit.
