- Guidance from the DfES about the Use of Outdoor Centres - The AALA inspects the safety for under-18s of (and, if satisfied, awards a licence for) specific activities comprising types of climbing, caving, trekking and non-powered watersports. These categories are defined in the regulations. Details are on the AALA website www.aala.org . Where a provider is licensed you need not seek further assurances of safety for the licensed activities. It is recommended by Middlesbrough CFL Department that schools, services and units use only those centre which are licensed. Guidance should be sought, where necessary, from the EVO at the planning stages for the visit. It is useful to note that outdoor centres which run non-licensable activities must still have comprehensive safety systems in place.
