Q. How do I find information about commercial Outdoor Education Centres?

A. Look for details on the AALA website. Enquire if the Centre has a website. Undertake a search using one of the search engines.

Q. Which coach companies do we use for swimming?

Q. Who does risk assessments on the coach?

A. Risk assessments on coach travel - the coach company should have a roadworthy certificate. The transport section will have checked this. Risk assessments should be carried out by the school with regard to the coach travel.

Q. What guidance is there to the use of seatbelts in taxis?

A. There are no specific guidance for the use of seatbelts in taxis. Please refer to the Highway Code for specific requirements. Also guidance can be found on the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents website. The fact sheet is full of useful information

Q. What guidance is there with reard to the use of seatbelts with babies?

A. There is a generally agreed industry guideline and this should be followed. Seek further guidance, if required, from the Education Visits Officer.

Q. When do we need a visa for a visit abroad?

A. Guidance can be found on the Foreign Office website.This guidance relates to UK passport holders. Where pupils hold other passports it is essential that guidance is sought. Visits even within the EU for non UK pasport holders may necessitate a visa.

Q. Do we need to use travel firms or can we develop our own visits abroad?

A. The choice is one which the visit leader/headteachers must make. In general it is more sensible and potentially less troublesome to use an accredited company.

Q. How do we deal with issues relating to Special Educational Needs?

A. Pupils with Special Educational Needs should not be treated less favourably. As far as is reasonably practical they should have access to the curriculum and premises. Where necessary reasonable adjustments should be made to arrangements. Refer to your schools disability action plan.
